What is the point of Catcher in the Rye?  When we read books, we usually come away from our reading experience a little richer, having given more thought to a particular aspect of life.  What do you think J.D. Salinger intended for us to gain from reading this novel?  This essay should be in MLA format and submitted to Turnitin.com by Monday at 12:00 noon.  It should be 1-3 paragraphs in length and written according to PVHS writing style (BP, CD, CM,CM).

CTR:  Discuss Ch. 24-26.  Journal 7 Carousel- In one of the most powerful scenes in the novel, Holden takes his sister Phoebe for a ride on the carousel in Central Park. What does the carousel symbolize? Explain what reaching for the golden ring means.  What is the significance of catching a golden ring on a carousel? How could it relate to the novel?
Why is this scene so important? What makes Holden so happy at this point? Do you think makes a breakthrough? If so, what kind?

CTR: Ch. 15 discussion.  Journal #5: "Suitcases" - In the middle of the novel, Holden goes into great detail about suitcases.  The suitcases act as a metaphor, but for what?  What is Holden really talking about when he discusses the suitcases?  Read Ch. 16.

Class Work/Homework: Grammar- This will be your final review for this chapter. Complete the Chapter Review in your comp book for pages beginning on 105 in the grammar book. You should complete all 40 sentences and write out 1-30, but just provide the sentence identification for 31-40. Follow the directions in the book. You should have submitted all of your grammar lessons to this point to Turnitin.  There is an assignment for each, but each assignment will only take one submission.  Take a photo of multiple pages if possible and submit in one submission.

1984-  Be sure you have make all of the edits from previous drafts, use MLA format, correctly cite sources, and have added a concluding statement before you submit your final draft.  Please make your final review and corrections based on my edits on Turnitin.com.

1984- Review my comments and editing and make necessary corrections. Today you add your concluding statement. Refer back to the prompt and thesis statement to be sure you have addressed all points. Rephrase the thesis in a conclusive format. You may also add an additional introductory sentence if you feel it’s needed. Please check back to review my editing .

1984- On Turnitin.com, please review the edits I have made to your essay and make corrections. Today you will add your commentary statements. You need two for each concrete detail. This is your explanation of Orwell’s message to the reader about your chosen theme. I will review these and supply comments before next week.

Class Work/ Homework: Grammar- Take the notes for sentence structure from the Clause Chart document on Edlio. Read through pages 102-103 in your grammar book on sentence structure. 1984- On Turnitin.com refer to my comments regarding your submitted thesis statement edits and make corrections according to comments. You will then add one sentence body points (2-3) and your concrete detail/support (1 per body point) to the essay for each body point. Be sure to cite your quotes correctly (page number only).  DO NOT ADD COMMENTARY YET.

Class Work/Homework: Grammar- We will be working to distinguish between adjective, adverb and noun subordinate clauses on page 99 and 100 in the packet I gave you last class. Use your clause chart when completing this. You should also complete the Review B assignment on p. 101 in the grammar book. Write out the sentences, underline the clause, and identify it as adjective, adverb or noun. You may put this in your composition book in a separate marked section or on a separate sheet of paper.

1984- I have attached the group theme responses to Edlio in the Essay assignment for your reference. Review these and identify which prompt you would like to respond to on the blue sheet I gave to you on Friday. (I have also added this to the Edlio site.) Write your thesis sentence (one complete statement) of George Orwell’s message to his readers about your chosen theme (prompt). These will need to be submitted to turnitin.com as follows: identify your chosen prompt by number and type the thesis statement on one paper and submit.
