Paula Stapleton has been a counselor at Palos Verdes High School since 2002. She started her career as a social studies teacher and has taught at the elementary level as well.

Paula earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from Loyola Marymount University where she also earned a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling as well as a Pupil Personnel Services Credential.

She is a native of the South Bay and has four children who attend PV schools.

Megan Lichter was born and spent the early part of her childhood in Johannesburg, South Africa. She later immigrated to San Diego, where she went to high school. Megan’s passion for counseling and guidance started from a young age, and led her back to South Africa, where she taught English during college. These experiences inspired her to make counseling and education a career. Megan earned her Bachelor of Science in Family Consumer Sciences Education, with a minor in Judaic Studies, as well as her secondary teaching credential from the University of Arizona (Go Cats!). She moved to Los Angeles to pursue her Masters Degree in Counseling, at LMU, where she received her Pupil Personnel Services Credential as well. She also holds her College Counseling Certificate from UCLA extension. Prior to coming to PVHS, Megan was a counseling assistant at Redondo Shores, a continuation high school in Redondo Beach, and a counselor at Santa Monica High School. She currently lives in Redondo Beach.

Kristen Nelson has been a staff member at Palos Verdes High School since the school reopened in 2002. Prior to becoming a counselor, Kristen's roles at PVHS included Activities Director, History Teacher and Cheer/Song Coach . Kristen obtained her Bachelors of Arts Degree from UC Santa Barbara, a Masters Degree in Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University and her Pupil Personal Services Credential from UCLA. Kristen is a native to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and loves working in the community that she grew up in. She currently lives in Rancho Palos Verdes with her husband Chris and two daughters, Davia and Finley.

Amerika McHugh grew up in Singapore and attended Singapore American School. She moved to Los Angeles to attend Loyola Marymount University and received a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. She later returned to Loyola Marymount University to receive her Masters Degree in Counseling and a Pupil Personnel Services Credential. She also holds her College Counseling Certificate from UCLA extension. She currently lives in Redondo Beach with her husband, Mike, and their children, Brendan and Molly.

No stranger to the peninsula, Heidi grew up in Palos Verdes. Heidi earned her Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and Human Development from the University of Arizona and her Master of Arts in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential from Loyola Marymount University. Heidi also holds the College Counseling Certification from UCLA Extension. Prior to coming to PVHS, Heidi served as the school counselor at Ridgecrest Intermediate School for six years.

Joanne is a native of Long Island, NY where she attended Dowling College and Adelphi University. Joanne enjoyed the wonderful opportunity of living and working in both Switzerland and Kenya, and received her Master of Science degree in Management and Organizational Development from the United States International University in Nairobi.  After moving to Palos Verdes with her family in 2001, Joanne eventually began working with the PVPUSD in the office of Pupil Services. Joanne is especially proud to work together with the counseling department and to assist students in their aspirations related to college and career. Joanne is a member of WACAC (Western Association of College Admission Counselors) and NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counselors). She has one daughter who attended schools within the PVPUSD.

Teresa Hoffman attended the University of California at Davis, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies. She worked for Ashland, Inc. for several years in marketing and technical support. Before joining the staff at PVHS in 2009, she volunteered extensively in the College and Career Center and experienced the college admissions/financial aid process with her two children. She is currently a member of the Western Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC) and has attended several of their workshops on financial aid and scholarships. Teresa and her husband, Larry, have lived on the Palos Verdes Peninsula for over 20 years. They have two children who attended schools within the PVPUSD.

Megan is one of two Sage Therapists here at PV High. Megan is a registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist practicing at Sage. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and went on to earn her Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology from California State University, Long Beach. She gained her graduate training at the CSULB Community Clinic and the Long Beach Trauma Recovery Center.  Megan is experienced in working with adolescents, adults, families, and couples, with extensive training in trauma and evidence-based treatment models. Megan has particular interest in adolescents and identity development. She feels passionate about walking with adolescents as they learn to navigate through struggles such as anxiety, depression, relational conflict, trauma, grief, and transition. Her desire is to provide a safe space on campus where students can come to process through emotions and difficult situations, and where students can find a sense of hope, strength, and belonging. Megan is excited to join the PVHS team and is looking forward to walking alongside students as they grow, heal, and explore.

Jodie is the other Sage Therapist at PV High. Jodie is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist practicing at Sage.  She received her Bachelor’s in Theater Arts, and went on to receive a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University, Long Beach (GO BEACH!).  Jodie acquired her training through CSULB Community Clinic and the Jewish Family and Children’s Services in Long Beach. Before coming to PV High, Jodie worked as a Wraparound Clinician where she gained experience working with children and families experiencing trauma, loss, family conflict, depression, anxiety, etc . She has been a Sage Therapist in the PVPUSD district since January 2020 and previously worked at Palos Verdes Intermediate School, Miraleste Intermediate School, and Distance Learning Academy. Jodie has always had a passion for mental health and education. As a school based therapist, her mission is to help students and their families remove any barriers getting in the way of the student’s education through utilizing a Solution Focused and Strength Based approach. It is of the upmost importance to Jodie that students have a safe, welcoming, and nonjudgmental space to wrestle with tough emotions and experiences, she hopes students leave their time together feeling supported, heard, and understood. She is thrilled to be at PV High this year and greatly looks forward to meeting you soon.
